Baptism and Confirmation Sponsorship

Sponsorships

A Sponsor for the Sacrament of Baptism and Confirmation plays an important role in faith development of the newly baptized or confirmed young person. A sponsor certificate attests to the sponsor's regular practice of Catholic faith.

For Baptism requests, please fill out the REQUEST FORM and stop by or mail it to the Parish Office.

The directives for godparents or sponsor for Baptism or Confirmation:

  • When a child or an adult is to be baptized, he or she must have at least one godparent or sponsor (the terms are interchangeable). It is customary for children to have two godparents. When there are two, one must be male and the other female.
  • For Baptism or Confirmation, Godparents/Sponsors must meet all the following criteria, which are established by universal Church law, and which do not vary from place to place.

Godparents must:

  • Be Catholic (1 must be Catholic, the other can be Christian).
  • Have been baptized, confirmed, and receive Communion.
  • Be 16 years of age or older (although there may be exceptions to this rule at the discretion of the bishop).
  • Must be living a life consistent with their own baptismal vows. This means that they must be practicing the faith weekly.  If a sponsor is married, their marriage must be recognized by the Roman Catholic Church. In general, he or she must obtain a letter from their own pastor which affirms that they meet the above requirements.
  • In order to obtain a Sponsor Certificate from Our Lady of Peace R.C. Parish, a person must be an active registered Parishioner at Our Lady of Peace R.C.Church for at least six months.
